Vocal Editing & Tuning for Modern Productions

Achieving a polished, radio-ready vocal performance requires more than just a great singer; it demands surgical precision in the editing phase. We provide professional pitch correction and timing alignment that preserves the emotional integrity of the performance while meeting the exacting standards of contemporary music production.

Professional studio condenser microphone with pop filter for vocal recording

In the current landscape of music distribution, the vocal is the focal point of every track. Whether you are producing a pop anthem, an R&B groove, or a cinematic ballad, the listener's ear is naturally drawn to the voice. Even minor inconsistencies in pitch or timing can distract from the song's message and lower the perceived production value. Our approach to vocal editing is not about creating a robotic sound, but about enhancing the natural delivery to ensure it sits perfectly within the mix.

Based in our Melbourne CBD control room, we combine technical expertise with a musical ear to handle everything from transparent pitch correction to the stylized "tuned" sound prevalent in modern urban music. We understand that every artist has a unique signature, and our goal is to support that identity by removing technical flaws and polishing the phrasing, ensuring your vocals compete with major label releases on streaming platforms.

01

File Analysis

We review your raw vocal stems, checking for phase issues, clipping, and the overall consistency of the recording environment to establish the baseline for editing.

02

Pitch & Timing Correction

Using industry-standard tools, we manually adjust every note and syllable, ensuring the pitch is accurate and the timing aligns with the track's grid.

03

Dynamic Cleaning

We perform detailed clip gaining and breath removal, ensuring the vocal flow is natural and there are no distracting pops or unwanted noises.

04

Final Quality Review

The edited vocals are listened to in our ATC-monitored room to ensure the tuning sounds musical and the transitions are seamless before delivery.

Who is this service for?

Our vocal tuning service is designed for a wide range of creators who have the raw recordings but lack the time or specialized tools to perform surgical editing. This includes independent singer-songwriters who want a polished sound without losing their organic feel, and beatmakers who are working with vocalists and need the hooks to be perfectly in tune for a commercial pop or hip-hop sound.

It is also an essential step for producers who are preparing tracks for professional mixing. By providing a "cleaned" vocal stem, you allow the mixing engineer to focus on the tone and space rather than fixing pitch errors, which ultimately results in a superior final master. Whether you have a single lead vocal or a complex arrangement of harmonies and doubles, we ensure every layer is locked in.

How the workflow operates

The process begins with a digital transfer of your files. Once we receive the stems, we analyze the key of the song and the specific requirements of the genre. We don't apply a "one size fits all" setting; instead, we treat every phrase individually. For some sections, we might use transparent correction that is completely undetectable, while for others, we may employ a more aggressive tuning style if that is the creative direction of the project.

After the initial edit, we provide the tuned stems for your review. If the tuning feels too mechanical or not enough, we use our allocated revision rounds to refine the result. We communicate throughout the process to ensure the emotional nuances of the performance—such as intentional slides or vibrato—are preserved while the off-pitch notes are corrected.

What the client needs to prepare

To achieve a professional result, we require high-quality raw recordings. Please provide your vocal stems as separate WAV files. We strictly adhere to the following technical requirements: a sample rate of 44.1kHz or higher and a bit depth of 24-bit. This ensures that the pitch correction software has enough data to manipulate the waveform without introducing audible artefacts or "warbling."

Crucially, please ensure your recordings have sufficient peak headroom of at least -6dB. Files that are clipping (hitting 0dB) can cause permanent distortion that cannot be removed during tuning. Additionally, please provide the song's key and a rough mix or instrumental track so we can ensure the vocals are tuned to the correct scale and aligned with the rhythm of the production.

Deliverables and final output

Upon completion, you will receive the fully edited and tuned vocal stems in the same format and sample rate as the originals (WAV 24-bit). All files are delivered as "dry" stems, meaning they are free of reverb or delay, allowing you total flexibility during the mixing stage. Each file is clearly named to correspond with your original delivery.

If the project involves multiple layers, such as lead, doubles, and harmonies, each will be delivered as a separate file, perfectly aligned to the project start point. This ensures that you can simply drag and drop the files back into your DAW and they will be perfectly in sync with your instrumental, ready for the next stage of production.

Turnaround times and scheduling

Our average turnaround for vocal editing is 5 business days. This timeframe allows us to perform the meticulous manual work required for high-end tuning. We do not rely on automated "auto-tune" passes; every note is checked by a human engineer. If your project is urgent, we offer a rush fee of 30% of the total cost, which prioritizes your files in our queue.

Please note that our capacity is limited to ensure quality control, as we only take a small number of tracks per month. We recommend booking your session via our contact page well in advance, especially if you have a full album or EP that requires consistent tuning across multiple songs.

What is NOT included in this service

It is important to distinguish vocal editing from vocal mixing. This service covers the "corrective" phase: pitch, timing, and cleaning. It does NOT include the application of EQ, compression, saturation, or spatial effects like reverb and delay. Those processes are part of our Single Track Mixing service.

Furthermore, we do not provide songwriting or vocal coaching. We work with the performance provided; we cannot "create" a vocal line or rewrite lyrics. If the raw recording is of extremely poor quality (e.g., heavy background noise or severe clipping), we may notify you that the files are unsuitable for tuning, as the software cannot accurately detect pitch in compromised audio.

Pricing and GST breakdown

Our pricing is transparent and based on a per-track rate. In accordance with Australian law, all prices are listed including the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST). For B2B clients, we provide a detailed invoice showing the amount ex GST for your accounting purposes. Payment terms for business entities are 14 days from the date of invoice.

The standard rate for precision tuning covers the lead vocal and basic backing tracks. If your project requires an extensive amount of harmony stacks (more than 4 layers), we may adjust the quote based on the total number of stems. All bookings require a 50% deposit before work commences to secure your spot in the production schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my voice sound like a robot?

Only if that is what you want. We offer two distinct styles: transparent tuning, where the corrections are invisible to the listener, and the "modern tuned" sound used in pop and hip-hop. You specify the desired effect during the booking process.

Can you fix a recording that was done in a bedroom?

Yes, provided the signal is clean and not clipping. While we cannot remove the "room sound" (reverb) during the tuning phase, we can certainly fix the pitch and timing of the performance regardless of where it was recorded.

What happens if I'm not happy with the tuning?

Your booking includes 3 rounds of revisions. If a particular section feels unnatural or you want a different tuning intensity, just let us know, and we will adjust the files accordingly.

Do you provide the project files for the tuning?

No, we deliver the final processed audio as WAV files. The specific software settings and project files used for the tuning are the proprietary workflow of our engineers.
