Stem Mastering for Absolute Sonic Control

Bridge the gap between a great mix and a world-class master. Stem mastering allows for surgical precision by processing grouped stems rather than a single stereo file, ensuring your vision is preserved while the technical polish is perfected.

High-end audio interface and professional cabling in a clean studio environment

Traditional stereo mastering is an art of subtlety, but sometimes a track requires more than just global EQ and compression. Stem mastering—also known as hybrid mastering—offers a middle ground between a full remix and a final master. By separating your mix into a few key groups (such as drums, bass, vocals, and instruments), we can address specific frequency clashes and dynamic issues that are impossible to fix once the track is bounced to a single file.

At Banaedgezen, our stem mastering process is designed for artists and producers who have a mix they love but feel it lacks that final "commercial" punch or spatial depth. Whether you are preparing a track for a club system, a cinematic release, or a streaming platform, we use our ATC and Genelec monitoring environment in Melbourne to ensure your stems are balanced with mathematical precision and musical intuition. This approach provides the flexibility to enhance the low-end without affecting the vocals or to add air to the high-end without introducing harshness to the percussion.

The Stem Mastering Workflow

01

Stem Delivery

You provide the grouped stems (typically 4-8 files) following our technical specifications for sample rate and headroom.

02

Analysis & Balance

We analyse the interaction between groups, correcting phase issues and balancing the energy distribution across the frequency spectrum.

03

Advanced Processing

Applying targeted compression, saturation, and spatial enhancement to each stem before the final glue compression stage.

04

Final Polish & Export

The final master is rendered with precise LUFS targeting and true-peak limiting for your chosen distribution channels.

Who is Stem Mastering For?

Stem mastering is an ideal solution for a variety of production scenarios where a standard stereo master falls short. First, it is essential for producers who find that their vocal is "buried" in the mix or that the kick drum is fighting with the bass synth. Since we have access to these elements separately, we can carve out space for each, resulting in a transparent and powerful sound.

It is also the preferred choice for electronic music producers and DJ-focused artists. In club environments, the relationship between the sub-bass and the kick is critical. Stem mastering allows us to apply multi-band processing specifically to the low-end stem, ensuring the track translates powerfully on massive sound systems without distorting. Additionally, independent labels often use this service to bring a cohesive sound to an EP where different tracks were mixed in different environments.

How the Process Works

The process begins with a technical audit of your files. We don't just apply presets; we listen to the intent of the song. We examine how the drum stem interacts with the melodic elements. If the percussion is too dominant, we can attenuate it without affecting the harmony. This surgical approach allows us to enhance the "depth" of the mix, pushing some elements further back in the virtual space while bringing the lead elements forward.

Once the balance is established, we move into the enhancement phase. This involves using high-end outboard gear and precision plugins to add harmonic excitement. We focus on the "glue"—the process of making separate stems feel like a single, unified piece of music. Every decision is cross-referenced against our studio monitors to ensure that the master sounds consistent across different listening environments, from high-end headphones to car speakers.

Preparing Your Stems

To achieve professional results, your stems must be prepared correctly. We require files that are exported from your DAW without any master bus processing (no limiting or heavy compression on the output). This gives us the necessary headroom to work. According to our business rules, all stems should be at least 44.1kHz and 24-bit. We strongly recommend leaving a peak headroom of -6dB to avoid clipping during the upload process.

Common stem groupings include: 1. Drums/Percussion, 2. Bass/Sub, 3. Main Instruments/Synths, 4. Lead Vocals, 5. Background Vocals/FX. Ensure all stems start at the exact same time (zero-point) so they align perfectly when imported into our session. If you are unsure how to organise your files, we recommend reading our guide on online vs in-studio mixing to understand the technical requirements of remote collaboration.

What You Receive

Upon completion, you will receive a professional delivery package designed for immediate distribution. The primary deliverable is a high-resolution WAV file (24-bit) and a high-quality MP3 version for quick review. We provide a detailed loudness report including Integrated LUFS and True Peak values, ensuring you know exactly how your track sits compared to industry standards.

Depending on your needs, we can provide alternative versions such as an instrumental master or a "clean" version. Every project is backed by our commitment to quality; you receive a master that is technically flawless and musically enhanced. All files are stored securely for 6 months after delivery, giving you peace of mind should you need to request a minor adjustment for a different platform later.

Timelines and Turnaround

Our average turnaround time is 5 business days. This period allows for the initial analysis, the actual engineering work, and a mandatory "ear-rest" period where we listen to the master with fresh ears the following morning. We believe that rushing the final 1% of a track is where most mistakes happen, so we adhere to a disciplined schedule.

For projects with urgent deadlines, we offer a rush fee of 30% over the standard price, which prioritises your project in our queue. Please note that the turnaround time starts from the moment we receive the correct files and the required deposit. We operate Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM (AEDT), with limited hours on Saturdays.

What is NOT Included

It is important to distinguish stem mastering from a full mix. We do not perform "mixing" tasks such as changing the volume of a single snare hit, replacing a synth sound, or re-recording a vocal part. If your mix has fundamental structural issues—such as a vocal that is completely out of tune or a drum loop that is off-beat—these must be corrected in the mixing stage before the stems are sent to us.

Additionally, our standard fee does not include unlimited revisions. We provide 3 rounds of revisions to ensure the master meets your expectations. Any further changes beyond these three rounds will be billed as additional hours of work. For a full breakdown of our legal obligations and the scope of work, please refer to our Terms and Conditions.

Pricing and GST

Our pricing is transparent and based on the complexity of the stem group. For stem mastering, we charge per track. The price listed includes the Australian Goods and Services Tax (GST) at 10%. For B2B clients, the price excluding GST is provided for accounting purposes. Payment is structured with a 50% deposit required to start the project, with the remainder due upon approval of the final master.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stereo mastering and stem mastering?

Stereo mastering works with one file. If the vocals are too quiet, we can't turn them up without turning up everything else. Stem mastering works with groups (e.g., all vocals in one file). This allows us to adjust the volume, EQ, or compression of the vocals independently of the drums or synths.

How many stems should I send?

Typically, 4 to 8 stems are ideal. Common groups include Drums, Bass, Instruments, and Vocals. Sending too many stems (e.g., 50 individual tracks) turns the process into a full mix, which is a separate service. If you have more than 8 stems, please contact us for a custom quote.

Can you fix a bad mix through stem mastering?

We can significantly improve a mix's balance, clarity, and power. However, stem mastering cannot fix fundamental issues like poor recording quality, severe clipping in the original files, or incorrect timing. Professional results come from a solid mix that just needs a professional polish.

What happens if I'm not happy with the first version?

We include 3 rounds of revisions. You can provide specific feedback (e.g., "the bass is slightly too heavy at 60Hz" or "the vocals need more brightness"), and we will adjust the master accordingly until it fits your vision.
